What’s new on the 2026 Subaru Crosstrek?

The biggest changes for 2026 are a stronger standard engine and a new hybrid. Here is what changed from 2025:

• 2.5-liter engine on every gas trim. The base Crosstrek now gets the 180-hp, 178 lb-ft engine that was previously reserved for higher trims, replacing the old 152-hp 2.0-liter.
• New Crosstrek Hybrid. A 2.5-liter engine paired with electric motors and a lithium-ion battery makes 194 hp combined. It comes in Sport Hybrid and Limited Hybrid trims and keeps full-time all-wheel drive.
• More standard features. A heated steering wheel is now standard on the Limited, Limited Hybrid, and Wilderness. The Limited trims add the DriverFocus Distraction Mitigation System, and the base Crosstrek gains rear-seat side airbags and push-button start.

Which 2026 Crosstrek trim should I buy?

All seven trims share all-wheel drive, EyeSight Driver Assist Technology, X-MODE, and at least 8.7 inches of ground clearance. The differences are powertrain, fuel economy, and equipment.

• Choose the Base if you want the lowest price with all-wheel drive, EyeSight, and the 180-hp engine.
• Choose the Premium for the biggest upgrade per dollar. For $1,000 more than the Base, it adds the 11.6-inch touchscreen, wireless phone integration, and roof rails. A $2,245 option package adds heated seats, blind-spot detection, a power seat, and a moonroof.
• Choose the Sport or Limited if you want more comfort features. Heated front seats are standard on both; the Limited adds leather, a heated steering wheel, and blind-spot detection.
• Choose the Wilderness if you drive gravel roads, go camping, or tow. It has the most ground clearance and more than twice the towing capacity of other trims.
• Choose a Hybrid if you do mostly city and suburban driving. Note that the Sport Hybrid costs $3,370 more than the Sport, but that price also covers a moonroof, power seat, and blind-spot detection.

Crosstrek or Crosstrek Hybrid: is the hybrid worth it?

The Crosstrek Hybrid is worth it if most of your driving is in town. It is EPA-rated at 36 mpg city, compared with 26 mpg for the gas Crosstrek, so the savings are largest in stop-and-go traffic. On the highway the gap narrows to 3 mpg. The Hybrid is also the most powerful Crosstrek, at 194 hp.

How much fuel does the Hybrid save in a year?

At 12,000 miles a year and $3.50 per gallon, the Crosstrek Hybrid uses about 80 fewer gallons than the gas Crosstrek, saving roughly $280 a year. Your savings will be higher if you drive more miles or mostly in town.

For comparison, the Limited Hybrid costs $2,000 more than the Limited. At about $280 a year, fuel savings alone would take roughly seven years to cover that difference. The Hybrid also brings 14 more horsepower and a Harman Kardon audio system, so many buyers weigh those too.

One trade-off: the Hybrid’s battery sits under the cargo floor, so it has 18.6 cubic feet of cargo space behind the rear seat, compared with 19.9 in the gas Crosstrek.

Is the 2026 Crosstrek good in snow?

Yes. For winters in Palatine, Arlington Heights, and across the Northwest suburbs, every 2026 Crosstrek comes with the three things that matter most on snowy roads: full-time all-wheel drive, at least 8.7 inches of ground clearance, and X-MODE traction control.

Symmetrical All-Wheel Drive powers all four wheels all the time and shifts power to the wheels with the most grip if one slips. It is standard on the Hybrid too, which uses a mechanical all-wheel-drive system rather than a separate rear electric motor.

X-MODE is a traction mode that adjusts the engine, transmission, and other systems for slippery surfaces. Every 2026 Crosstrek has the dual-mode version, with Snow/Dirt and Deep Snow/Mud settings, plus Hill Descent Control.

Heated seats: Heated front seats are standard on the Sport and Limited and part of an option package on the Premium. A heated steering wheel is standard on the Limited, Limited Hybrid, and Wilderness.

All-wheel drive helps you get going and stay in control, but it does not shorten stopping distances. Winter tires make the biggest difference in braking on ice.

How safe is the 2026 Crosstrek?

According to Subaru, the 2026 Crosstrek earned a 5-Star Overall Vehicle Score from NHTSA, and the 2026 Crosstrek Hybrid earned a 2026 IIHS TOP SAFETY PICK+, the Institute’s highest award. IIHS rates the Hybrid separately from the gas Crosstrek because its structure and restraints differ.

Every 2026 Crosstrek comes standard with EyeSight Driver Assist Technology, which includes pre-collision braking, lane departure warning, lane keep assist, and adaptive cruise control with lane centering. Blind-spot detection with rear cross-traffic alert is standard on the Limited, Sport Hybrid, and Limited Hybrid and optional on the Premium.

How much cargo space and towing capacity does the Crosstrek have?

The gas Crosstrek has 19.9 cubic feet of cargo space behind the rear seat, and up to 54.7 cubic feet with the seat folded. Most trims tow up to 1,500 pounds; the Wilderness tows up to 3,500 pounds thanks to revised gearing and cooling.

Should I get a Crosstrek or a Forester?

Choose the Crosstrek if you want a smaller, lower-priced SUV that’s easy to park. Choose the Forester if you need more passenger and cargo room. Both have standard all-wheel drive and 8.7 inches of ground clearance, and both Wilderness models tow 3,500 pounds.
